While conventional dentistry has always been effective, many consider the visible results of repair unattractive, such as silver fillings or the wire clasps of partial dentures. This can be changed now by esthetic and cosmetic dentistry, born in the late 1970’s. Esthetic dentistry uses conventional procedures and treatment to solve problem’s but with an improved, natural looking result. Cosmetic dentistry comprises totally elective procedures performed solely to enhance appearance. Both procedures require a high-level of clinical experience and artistic abilities.

Such procedures can whiten teeth, replace dark fillings, change the shape and contour of missing teeth and restore damaged teeth to function and beauty. No matter what the desired result of treatment, it never comes at the expense of a patient’s dental health or comfort.

When I first met Dr. Gregory G. Zirakian, D.M.D., I noticed he was wearing a laugh meter on his lab coat. The arrow was on high and I knew I was in the right place. I had been a loyal client of the same dentist for over 20 years, but my increasingly busy schedule made it necessary to find someone closer to home. When I called Dr. Zirakian’s East Longmeadow office with many questions, office manager, Kethley Goodrich, graciously answered them all. Kethley is a great ambassador for the office, as are all of the women who work there. You can feel how much everyone enjoys each other’s company in the form of friendly and humorous exchanges in a very professional and relaxed work atmosphere. I am very fortunate to have access to regular and high-quality dental care. This is not the case for millions of Americans.

According to a 2012 report from the office of Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont), over 130 million Americans do not have dental insurance; only 45% of Americans age 2 and older saw a dental provider in the past 12 months. There are also many low- to no-access areas in the country, due to a shortage of dental practitioners and a higher concentration of dental practices in suburban areas.

Growing up poor in the South Bronx, I had very limited access to dental care as a child. My recollection of visiting the dentist revolves around abject terror at the hands of a dentist who was rumpy, ghostly and unkempt. That florescent clinic painted a sickly green, provided a horror movie backdrop that magnified the dental probe in his gnarly hand into an instrument of torture. Until the age of 36, my dental visits were sporadic at best, until I was referred to a very compassionate female dentist in Northampton, Dr. Valerie Karraker, who moved to New Jersey soon after I became her patient. After feeling safe in a dental chair for the first time in my life, her departure was disappointing. Fortunately, her practice was passed on to Dr. Patricia Bonner, an equally caring, gentle and conscientious dentist, who remains in her Northampton practice. Thanks to these two wonderful women dentists, I lost my fear of climbing into that once dreaded dental chair.

Now, with Dr. Zirakian, I am reminded once again of the profound impact that empathy, compassion, and humor have on patients across the spectrum of all medicine. The research of journalist and biochemist Norman Cousins, a pioneer in the connection between human emotions and health, continues to benefit humanity today, as the mind-body-spirit connections in healthcare have become more widely accepted and put into practice.

Besides insurance deficits and practitioner shortages, many avoid dentists due to experiences or fear of shame, being made to feel guilty, or fearing pain. A visit to the dentist should be fun,
gentle and patient-centered?ask Dr. Zirakian. “It is reasonable to expect the doctor to recognize that science may not have all the answers to problems of health and healing.”
